Chicago Bears: 3 Standouts from Preseason Week 2 vs. Giants
1. Clifton Duck, CB
There aren’t any questions about who the Chicago Bears will be starting outside at cornerback. Prince Amukamara and Kyle Fuller have locked down those positions and should prove to be solid contributors yet again. But with Bryce Callahan leaving in free agency, the Bears are looking for players to step up both in terms of being a nickel corner in the slot and as backups to the aforementioned starters.
It could well be free-agent signee Buster Skrine that already has the job won. Meanwhile, 2019 sixth-round pick Duke Shelley could well throw his hat into the ring. On Friday night, however, undrafted free agent Clifton Duck out of Appalachian State threw his hat into the ring with a strong performance and the play of the night for Chicago.
Late in the game, the Giants were threatening to score at the Bears 1-yard line when Alex Tanney looked to punch in a touchdown pass. Duck read the route and jumped it, making a diving interception. He then showed off his football IQ and playmaking by bouncing up and taking the return for 62 yards.
Duck also added one tackle and one pass defense to the box score on Friday night. Though he’s a longshot, he is certainly making his case that he’s deserving of a roster spot with big-time plays like the one he made late against the Giants. He’ll be one to watch for the 53-man roster battle over the final two weeks of the preseason.
