2. Ty Summers, LB
One of the key position battles to watch in Week 3 of the preseason for the Green Bay Packers was at inside linebacker. A position where this team is thing, particularly with Oren Burks going down earlier in the preseason, the team wanted to get a good look at both Curtis Bolton and Ty Summers to see which player would step up in the biggest moment for both players to date.
Admittedly, Bolton had to leave the game against the Raiders due to injury, so he was unable to fully make his case — a shame as he was probably leading the battle entering this game. However, even if Bolton had been on the field, Summers was able to step up and have by far his best game of the 2019 preseason to date.
Summers led the Packers by a mile in terms of tackles, posting 10 total and nine solo tackles on the night. The next highest total for Green Bay on the night was just four. But it wasn’t just the TCU product’s stats that really made his case to be a starter with Burks out of the lineup — it was how he did that.
The big knock on Summers to this point in the preseason was inconsistency, particularly with his tackling. On Thursday, he all but completely eliminated the poor form and missed tackles that had plagued him through the first two games of the preseason. He looked like a player that’s progressing and has the physical tools to be good in the middle of this defense.
