Green Bay Packers: 3 Standouts vs. Raiders in Preseason Week 3
1. Trevor Davis, WR
Coming into this dress rehearsal game, whether or not the starters played or not, it was going to be a big night for the wide receiver corps. There are nearly 10 players vying for spots on the 53-man roster and, spoiler alert, not all are going to make it. And while the injury to St. Brown might open things up a bit regardless, one wide receiver stepped up big time.
Trevor Davis was a 2016 fifth-round pick out of a Cal and hasn’t really done much in his NFL career to this point. In three seasons since he was drafted, the former Golden Bear has just eight catches for 94 yards and a touchdown. Having said that, he’s been impressing throughout training camp and needed to put it all together in a big game.
On Thursday night in Canada, he came through in a big way. Davis hauled in five of his six targets on the night for a team-leading 78 yards and a touchdown. He also impacted the game in other ways, notching an 18-yard carry on the night and also taking his lone punt return opportunity for 17 yards.
This was the exact type of game that Davis needed to secure a roster spot. What he did against Oakland validated all we’ve seen from Packers training camp to this point about the wide receiver. He may have very well locked up his position on the final 53-man group with his efforts on Thursday night.
