Geno Smith, QB

Smith is battling for Seattle’s backup quarterback position with former first-round pick, Paxton Lynch. Back in Week 1, Smith played horribly while Lynch put on a good performance. Smith missed Week 2 as he had a cyst removed, but Lynch failed to capitalize on the absence of his competition. He had a mediocre game at best. Now, Smith has returned.

In a game where only he and Wilson played at quarterback for the Seahawks, Smith looked serviceable. The keyword there is serviceable. He wasn’t spectacular, but he earned a spot on this list partially because of how the quarterback room is shaping up in Seattle.

Smith completed 11 of his 18 pass attempts, but his completions weren’t exactly high difficulty throws. He only averaged 6.5 yards per completion and finished with 117 passing yards. Smith also carried the ball six times with some success. While he ran for just 24 yards, an average of four yards per carry, he did scramble for an 11-yard touchdown run at the end of the third quarter.

It seems like Smith still has a leg up on Lynch in the backup quarterback race. Whoever loses the battle will likely be cut, considering the Seahawks have only kept one backup quarterback in recent history.

With how durable Wilson is, there’s no reason to waste roster spots on extra quarterbacks. No matter which quarterback gets cut though, they’ll likely draw the attention of some other backup needy team and get another shot at their NFL dream.
