Miami Dolphins: Could Ryan Fitzpatrick be traded to Colts?
By Larry Brake
Could the Miami Dolphins trade Ryan Fitzpatrick to the Indianapolis Colts with the retirement of Andrew Luck?
Andrew Luck shocked the sports world with his retirement from the Indianapolis Colts. Indianapolis has a huge void to fill at their quarterback position. Could the Miami Dolphins deal Ryan Fitzpatrick to the Colts prior to the start of the regular season?
After all, naming the starting quarterback would be much easier without Fitzpatrick on the roster. Josh Rosen would be the clear cut starter. The Dolphins could proceed into Week 1 without any quarterback controversy.
Miami makes Fitzpatrick’s eighth different NFL team. The 14-year veteran has played steadily in each stop. In 2018, he had a quarterback rating of 100.4 in eight games for Tampa Bay.
Currently, Brian Flores has not named a starter for Week 1. Armondo Salguero of the Miami Herald has commented on the situation:
"So far this preseason, neither quarterback has actually grabbed the job with clearly superior play over the other guy."
Perhaps, the Dolphins could move Fitzpatrick to the Colts. This would be the easiest remedy for that decision. Miami could sign a training camp roster cut to backup Rosen.
Would Indianapolis be able to afford Fitzpatrick’s contract? He signed a two-year deal in March worth $11 million, according to Spotrac.com. Indianapolis has the salary cap space to absorb his contract.
What would Miami be able to acquire from the Colts? Miami should look for offensive line depth. Another lineman would help in protecting Rosen. There might be another deal worth making
Would the Colts give up a middle-to-late-round draft selection? Maybe, a fifth-round pick would work for both teams. You can expect Indianapolis to leave no stone unturned in replacing Luck. Fitzpatrick might be their short term answer. It will be interesting to see how all this plays out.
If Flores names Fitzpatrick, will Rosen want out of Miami? If Rosen is selected, will Fitzpatrick be moved? Either way, the Colts have a need now and the Dolphins might have the player to fill the void.
