2. Derrick Brown, DT, Auburn

There’s nothing like two elite prospects facing off in a college football matchup. There’s no doubt that when Derrick Brown puts his hand in the dirt, Oregon quarterback Justin Herbert will pay attention. In fact, Herbert will be lucky if his front can stop Brown.

Brown is a prospect where his greatest gift is also his curse. He’s a quick-twitch, high-motor guy who focuses on disruption. Unfortunately, there are times when he’s too aggressive and leaves cutback back lanes open. He’ll leave his linebackers on an island, which can lead to unnecessary extra yards.

Nevertheless, when examining Brown’s game, the great outweighs the bad. He’s one of the top defensive players set to enter the 2020 NFL Draft right now.

At 6-5, 315 pounds, he’s similar to a player like Fletcher Cox in his ability to play with leverage and power. He fires out of his stance with a powerful club move. Because of his length, he eats up grass and closes in on the ball carrier.

When asked to play the run, he does a great job shedding controlling his man. He sheds in a hurry and engulfs his target. He’s athletic enough to work with twist and stunts and strong enough to hold the point.

Like Michael Brockers, Brown can play as a five-technique or inside in a 4-3 scheme. His versatility is what makes him one of the elite prospects in the 2020 draft. Where his stock goes from here is up to him and his ability to get to the quarterback.
