The strength of three: The 30 greatest trios in NFL history
By Ian Cummings
The NFL is always changing. In today’s modernized league, onlookers are graced with some of the most explosive offenses to date. Average yard totals and point totals go up almost every year. The game is constantly evolving, leaving the past in a haze.
It just makes it that much more impressive that the turn-of-the-century St. Louis Rams are still known as “The Greatest Show on Turf”.
From 1999 to 2001, the Rams monopolized the MVP award. Kurt Warner won the title in 1999 and 2001 with statistically dominant seasons, with the help of four-time Pro Bowler Isaac Bruce, while running back Marshall Faulk set the league ablaze in 2000 with 26 total touchdowns.
The Rams won a Super Bowl title in 1999, but the extent of the Greatest Show’s accomplishments stretch even beyond that. The Rams’ explosive trio, under the tutelage of Don Coryell disciple Mike Martz, broke an NFL record for total yards in a season, with 7,335 yards in 2000.
They also scored 1,569 points over the aforementioned three-year stretch, averaging 523 points per season, in an era when scoring over 500 was still an anomaly.
Yeah, they’re the Greatest Show on Turf. And no matter where the NFL’s evolution takes it, the Rams trio of Warner, Faulk, and Bruce will always keep that title.
