The strength of three: The 30 greatest trios in NFL history
By Ian Cummings
There’s always one group that sets the standard for success for an entire franchise for years to come. For Baltimore, and for the Colts, that group was the trio of Johnny Unitas, Lenny Moore, and Raymond Berry.
All three are Pro Football Hall of Famers and they boast an impressive legacy in the annals of NFL history. Unitas, a two-time NFL MVP, led the Colts to three NFL Championships, as well as their first Super Bowl title in 1970.
Berry was Unitas’ top receiver for the championships in 1958 and 1959. Moore was the Colts’ All-Pro ball carrier who balanced the unit and led the league with a whopping 16 touchdowns in 1964.
The team accomplishments achieved by this trio are spectacular, but far more impressive is the impact that this trio had on the game of football. Unitas and Berry formed perhaps the first tandem to emulate the modern passing game, and his Golden Arm, in the dead-ball era, set a statistical precedent that’s hard to reach even today.
Few triplets have both won the game of football and advanced the game of football. This Colts trio, however, has the right to claim that legacy.
