The scouting report over a year ago on a player that would prove to be the seventh overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft was pretty simple. University of Wyoming quarterback Josh Allen had the tools in terms of arm strength but there were questions about his accuracy. And once he got his opportunity, some of those issues were revealed. Allen finished the year completing just 52.8 percent of his passes during his first season.

Of course, there were a few mitigating circumstances. And the biggest was playing behind an offensive line that simply wasn’t up to the task. Allen was sacked 28 times in 12 games. But the bigger indicator of the problems up front was the fact that the young signal-caller would wind up on the move more than anticipated. Allen led the club with 631 yards on the ground on 89 attempts, to go along with eight scores.

Hence the new addition on the offensive line. The offseason signings included center Mitch Morse, guards Spencer Long, Quinton Spain and Jon Feliciano and tackles Ty Nsekhe and LaAdrian Waddle (currently on IR). General manager Brandon Beane also used a second-round pick in April on talented tackle Cody Ford. The release of LeSean McCoy means new backfield mates in Frank Gore and T.J. Yeldon and rookie Devin Singletary.

It’s hard to believe that Allen will wind up leading the team in rushing again. With better protection, the talented hurler can do what he really does best.
