Seattle Seahawks: 5 Surprise cuts from 53-man roster
By Samuel Teets
J.D. McKissic, RB
I did not see C.J. Prosise making the roster and Travis Homer was a little surprising as well. J.D. McKissic has been with the Seahawks for the last three seasons and just signed a one-year deal in April. While he isn’t exactly an irreplaceable part of the team, I thought his experience with the organization and the new contract would shield him from being cut. I was wrong.
It was always a given that the Seahawks would keep Chris Carson and Rashaad Penny. Carson ran for the fourth-most rushing yards per game last season among running backs with at least 50 carries. He finished the year with 1,151 rushing yards and nine rushing touchdowns, which was the best year by a Seahawks running back since Marshawn Lynch was beasting his way through opposing teams.
Last year’s first round pick (Penny) was also guaranteed a spot on the roster. Despite inconsistency and various struggles, Penny did amass 419 rushing yards on 4.9 yards per carry as Seattle’s third running back last season.
I can understand keeping Homer on the roster. Seattle did just take him in the sixth round of this year’s draft after all. It would be preemptive to cut him so early in his career unless he was bound for the practice squad. The real surprise though was the team holding on to Prosise, again.
After being a promising third-round pick in 2016, Prosise has landed on injured reserve in each of the last two seasons. He has not been able to remain healthy. However, Prosise played well this preseason. He averaged 6.4 yards per carry in Week 3 and 8.4 yards in Week 4. His late preseason play may have just saved his job.
Per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Detroit Lions have claimed McKissic on waivers.
