Jazz Ferguson, WR

I felt that this was coming, but it’s still disappointing to see Jazz Ferguson get cut. The undrafted rookie worked hard during the preseason to make an impact, but it wasn’t enough.

The Seahawks also cut veteran receiver Jaron Brown to make room for Clowney’s contract. Brown being cut wasn’t that surprising to me, I even anticipated it in an article a while ago. While he did record five touchdowns last season, he contributed few yards and receptions. In the face of a youth movement in the receiving corps, Brown was an overpaid veteran. Seattle brought Brown back shortly after he was cut because tight end Ed Dickson was placed on injured reserve.

I was still holding out hope that Ferguson might make the team though. He caught seven passes for 119 yards and a touchdown this preseason, and some of his plays ended up on highlight reels. Following his release, the Seahawks brought Ferguson back as a member of the practice squad.

The Seahawks will have a young and largely unproven receiving corps this season. Tyler Lockett is the only receiver on the team to have ever produced more than 500 yards in a season. The team’s second-most accomplished player is David Moore, who is entering his third season. However, Moore is dealing with an arm injury that could impact the start of his season. Malik Turner, a 2018 undrafted free agent, is returning for his second season with the team.

The other three receivers on the Seahawks are all rookies from this year’s draft class. D.K. Metcalf is the big name that everyone knows. The ultra-fit receiver faces heavy expectations entering the season. Gary Jennings and John Ursua aren’t in the spotlight as much, but both will be called on to contribute this year.
