Seattle Seahawks: 5 Surprise cuts from 53-man roster
By Samuel Teets
Earl Mitchell, DT
One undrafted rookie made the Seahawks this season. A year after finding Poona Ford as a gem at the position, Seattle is taking a chance on Michigan defensive tackle Bryan Mone. Keeping the rookie shoved Mitchell off of the roster.
Mitchell signed a one-year $1.02 million contract with Seattle in late July, but he only lasted just over a month with the team. The 31-year-old spent the last two seasons as a starter on the 49ers, but he didn’t exactly post any impressive stats. When teams are looking to trim their rosters, veterans on short contracts like Mitchell are some of the first players to go.
The more surprising move in this situation isn’t Mitchell being cut so much as it is Mone making the team. Most undrafted players never play in a regular season game and dozens of undrafted rookies flunk out of the NFL entirely every season. Credit Mone for putting in the work to defy the odds.
The Seahawks will be without star defensive tackle Jarran Reed for the first six games of the 2019 season. If Mone is going to see any playing time this year, that’s when he’ll hit the field. Of course, it’s unlikely that Mone will receive any playing time, but you never know with Carroll coached teams.
