Once again, the New England Patriots enter the season as the defending Super Bowl champions after they knocked off the Los Angeles Rams in what proved to be quite the defensive battle. After the game, the Patriots started to see a lot of changes take place.

They lost one of their defensive assistants as Brian Flores took the head coaching job with the Miami Dolphins. They also saw arguably their best defensive player leave in free agency as Trey Flowers joined another former Pats defensive coach, Matt Patricia, who is now the head coach in Detroit.

Malcom Brown also left as the big defensive tackle landed with the New Orleans Saints, which was one of the more underrated signings of the offseason.

While each of those losses will be felt, the biggest departure was the retirement of tight end Rob Gronkowski. The big pass-catcher decided to hang up the cleats as he said the game was wearing on him, which is understandable considering the number of injuries he had to deal with during his impressive career.

Still, this is the Patriots. They’ll find a way to keep rolling and will again be one of the best teams in the AFC. That leaves them drafting late in the first round once again, and this season they use that selection on Shaq Quarterman out of Miami.

The Hurricanes defender is the kind of player who thrives in New England as he’s able to play in run support as well as get after the passer. He’s had more than 80 tackles in each of his first three seasons and recorded five sacks last year.
