4.113: Cam Akers, RB, Florida State

Now in the fourth round, the Browns go back to the Florida State well and get a running back in Cam Akers. With the trade of Duke Johnson, the Browns are left with just Dontrell Hilliard and D’Ernest Johnson behind bell-cow Nick Chubb. While Akers is a fourth-round pick here, he is ranked as my third overall running back in this year’s draft class.

While Kareem Hunt is set to return in Week 10 for the Browns and he will be a restricted free agent after this season, there is no guarantee he will be a reliable option as off-the-field issues tend to follow players. Akers is extremely talented as both an open-field runner and a receiver out of the backfield; unfortunately, Akers was stuck behind one of the worst offensive lines in the country a year ago and it led to a decrease in production.

Akers looks to bounce back this year for the Seminoles and is off to a good start as he recorded 116 yards and a score in Florida State’s week one loss to Boise State, averaging nearly eight yards per carry. The 5-11, 212-pound back added an additional 12 yards on two catches out of the backfield as well.

If Hunt proves to be dependable for Cleveland, then the Browns could obviously avoid having to draft a running back next year, but there is a chance they could opt not to keep him after this season or he could find himself in another sticky situation. Akers would provide a nice one-two punch in Cleveland next to Chubb for years to come.
