Chicago Bears: 3 Lessons learned vs. Packers in Week 1
Robinson shows that he’s ready for a great season
While the offense struggled all game long, one player who shined was Allen Robinson. He was Trubisky’s security blanket. Trubisky targeted him 13 times, completing seven of them for 102 yards (14.5 yards per catch average). That was a continuation of his success in the playoff game last season when he had 10 catches and 143 receiving yards (14.3 yards per catch).
As I mentioned earlier, Robinson was doing so well in the game that Trubisky forced passes to him and it cost the Bears in the end.
This is a good sign for Robinson, though. He only had 754 receiving yards last season, a number not expected for a prized free-agent signee. To be fair, he was still recovering from the ACL injury he suffered in 2017. This offseason, he was completely healthy and worked on getting on the right page with Trubisky.
It seems Robinson was the only receiver in sync with Trubisky. Trubisky didn’t feel comfortable enough with the other receivers. Taylor Gabriel had only two catches for 24 yards. Adam Shaheen had one catch for six yards and Cordarrelle Patterson had one catch for three yards.
The fact of the matter was that Trubisky felt more comfortable throwing to the running backs. In addition to the six catches by Davis and the one catch by Montgomery, Tarik Cohen had eight catches for 49 yards. The running backs were targeted 18 times. The receivers were targeted 26 times but Robinson had 13 of those targets.
Robinson played like the top wide receiver the Chicago Bears expected when they signed him. Yes, this was a tough loss, but there are some things to like and Robinson was one of them. Hopefully, this is the beginning of a great season for him and, hopefully, he helps the Chicago Bears win many games.
