Back to the aforementioned Jameis Winston. The former Florida State star and 2013 Heisman Trophy winner has now played four seasons in the National Football League and a total of 56 contests, with 54 contests. After starting every games during his first two pro campaigns, the talented specimen has missed time each of the last two years for different reasons.

The career totals show that Winston has connected on 61.6 percent of his throws for 14,628 yards and 88 scores through the air. Those look like pretty productive figures. Of course, the other side of the story is a combined 58 interceptions and 18 lost fumbles. That’s a depressing 76 turnovers in 56 outings. In 2018, Winston (17) and then-backup Ryan Fitzpatrick (13) combined for all but five of the team’s NFL-high 35 turnovers.

Enter new head coach Bruce Arians, who knows a thing or two about coaching quarterbacks. The offseason has been geared towards taking better care of the football by not forcing throws downfield.

Ironically, the Buccaneers will kick off the season on Sunday against the visiting San Francisco 49ers. It’s a team that Arians is familiar with (he coached against Kyle Shanahan in 2017) and one that set dubious NFL record last season for fewest interceptions (2) and fewest takeaways (7).
