NFL Notebook, Week 1: Action Jackson, Dalvin Cook is back, awards and more

‘Not Bad For a Running Back’
That’s what Ravens’ quarterback Lamar Jackson said to reporters following a 59-10 demolition of the Dolphins. For too long, Jackson has been prematurely labeled as a “run-only” quarterback with no arm. If Sunday’s performance is any indication, Jackson can be a very good quarterback in the NFL.
(It’s funny because not only did Jackson look like his collegiate, Heisman-winning self, but Miami also looked like a college team.)
Jackson tossed for a whopping five touchdowns and 324 passing yards on 17-for-20 attempts. While it was only the first game (and there wasn’t much competition, either), Jackson’s critics have to at least be rethinking their stance, right?
Of course, Jackson’s air show comes after wide speculation that Baltimore would feature Jackson in a run-heavy offense this season. Even coach John Harbaugh alluded to it:
Keep in mind this was likely a lopsided outlier for the Ravens’ offense, so they probably didn’t showcase their whole offense. Basically, there is no reason to complain about Jackson after this game. He showed he’s taken the next steps as a passer, yet nothing says he won’t have ample running opportunities throughout the season, too.
Jackson may be a fantastic runner, but no one should ever label him a ‘running back’ again.
