Fantasy Football 2019: Start or sit for Week 2
Fantasy football is underway once again so tough decisions are abound. Who should you start and sit in Week 2 of the 2019 season?
Fantasy football is a science but an inexact one. For instance, you can know that Lamar Jackson has upside at quarterback, but few could predict he’d throw for five touchdowns while only rushing three times. Similarly, you can know that the Kansas City Chiefs offense is potent but still not be able to predict that Sammy Watkins would be the top wide receiver in fantasy football after Week 1.
But that’s the way it goes for owners. Fantasy football turns expectations on their heads — especially in the first week of the season — and makes you question what you know. Thus, you are left with tough decisions to make in Week 2 (and moving forward). Luckily, we’re here to help with those choices.
While Week 1 was full of busts, breakouts, duds and debuts, we move on. As such, here is the start or sit list for Week 2 of the 2019 fantasy football season.
Let’s start with the quarterback position.
Quarterback
Start: Jared Goff (vs. Saints)
Jared Goff had a less than impressive Week 1 against a decent Carolina Panthers defense. Goff had just 186 yards on 23-of-39 passing with 1 touchdown and an interception for a measly 9.4 fantasy points in ESPN standard scoring. Goff did miss a couple of wide-open receivers by either overthrowing them or just not seeing them that easily could’ve gotten him to his projected 17.2 points.
Goff has also been fantasy royalty against the New Orleans Saints, who are giving up a whopping 22.8 fantasy points to opposing quarterbacks dating back to last season. The last time Goff played the Saints was in Week 9 of 2018, he had 391 passing yards and three touchdowns for a total of 34 fantasy points.
After the shaky start to the season, look for the Rams to come out swinging early against a lackluster Saints defense and look for Goff to be back in the top 10 fantasy quarterbacks for Week 2.
Sit: Baker Mayfield (vs. Jets)
Baker Mayfield struggled mightly in his 2019 season opener against Tennessee. He had 285 yards on 25-of-38 passing, one touchdown and three interceptions. Mayfield, from a fantasy perspective, had the worst game of his career, totaling just 9.4 points against the Titans.
The Jets played against another second-year quarterback, Josh Allen, in Week 1, and he amassed 254 yards passing on 24-of-37 with one touchdown and two interceptions for 16 fantasy points, meaning the Jets apparently aren’t friendly to opposing fantasy quarterbacks.
In his only other meeting with the Jets, while he didn’t start the game, Mayfield only had 10 fantasy points. The Jets defense held the Bills to zero points in the first half last week and they looked strong enough to hold Mayfield in check too.
