Seattle Seahawks: 3 Bold predictions vs. Steelers in Week 2
By Samuel Teets
1. D.K. Metcalf torches Pittsburgh’s secondary
It’s been quite a ride for D.K. Metcalf. His draft stock spiked after a freakish combine performance, but questions about his ability to run routes and his health dropped him to the second round where Seattle eagerly scooped him up.
Even going into training camp and the preseason, questions about Metcalf’s abilities persisted. Some pessimism began to develop around the receiver’s NFL future, but he blew all of that out of the water in Week 1.
Against the Bengals, Metcalf was targeted six times. He caught four passes for a team-leading 89 receiving yards. I think everyone assumed that Tyler Lockett would be Wilson’s top target, especially since the duo was so great last season. However, Metcalf looks like a viable second option for Wilson and the Seahawks.
When Seattle faces Pittsburgh, the Steelers will be heavily focused on Lockett’s game-changing speed. New England beat Pittsburgh deep a few times in Week 1 and the Steelers will be quick to try and prevent more big plays. The focus that Lockett will draw will create opportunities for Metcalf.
At 6-4, 229 pounds, Metcalf is a mismatch against most defensive backs. There isn’t anyone in Pittsburgh’s secondary who physically matches well with the Ole Miss product. If Pittsburgh’s performance in Week 1 was any indicator of how the team will play in Week 2, then Metcalf could be looking at a 100-yard day. Maybe he’ll even catch his first NFL touchdown.
