Arizona Cardinals: 3 Vital statistics for 2019 season
6
Last Sunday afternoon against the visiting Detroit Lions, 2018 Heisman Trophy winner Kyler Murray took the field as the Arizona Cardinals improve on just three wins from a season ago. He also became the sixth different starting quarterback for the team since 2017. The former University of Oklahoma standout was preceded by Carson Palmer, Drew Stanton, Blaine Gabbert, Sam Bradford and Josh Rosen, respectively.
Interesting enough, the Cardinals kept a very interesting streak alive when Murray opened the game on Sunday. For the seventh consecutive season, the club started a quarterback who was the first overall pick in his respective draft.
From 2013-17, it was veteran Carson Palmer (’03 by the Cincinnati Bengals). A year ago, it was journeyman Sam Bradford (’10 by the then-St. Louis Rams). And this year, it was Murray, who Arizona general manager Steve Keim took with the No. 1 pick in late April. After a slow start vs. Detroit, he and the team got their act together, overcame an 18-point fourth-quarter deficit and would eventually settle for a 27-all overtime tie with the Lions.
Murray finished with 308 yards through the air vs. Detroit, connecting on 29-of-54 passes and a pair of scores with one interception. On Sunday, the Cardinals hit the road to take on the Ravens. Can the rookie signal-caller pick up where he left off in the fourth quarter a week ago?
