Every NFL team’s greatest running back of all time
By Randy Gurzi
Selecting the Kansas City Chiefs best running back of all time is no easy task. They have three players who were good enough to earn the title, including two who played together for years in Priest Holmes and Larry Johnson.
Holmes came over in 2001 after playing for the Baltimore Ravens for four seasons and immediately became the bell-cow back. He had 1,555 yards and eight touchdowns. He added another two scores through the air and 672 yards receiving.
By 2003, Holmes found himself sharing time with Johnson, a first-round pick out of Penn State. Johnson was hardly on the field as a rookie but started to come into his own in year two. By his third season, he went for 1,750 yards and 20 touchdowns and followed that up with 1,789 yards and 17 touchdowns, but then started to decline after that and never hit 1,000 yards again.
The third option to take this title is Jamaal Charles, who ran for a franchise-best 7,260 yards and 43 touchdowns. He added another 2,457 yards and 20 receiving scores as well. Easily one of the most exciting players in team history, Charles was a threat to score from anywhere on the field.
However, Holmes ends up being the guy who gets the nod. He finished second in yardage in Chiefs history with 6,070 but had 33 more touchdowns than Charles, as he is No. 1 for the team with 76. He was also the most consistent for the longest time and had back-to-back seasons with 20-plus touchdowns — going for 21 in 2002 and 27 in 2003.
