Every NFL team’s greatest running back of all time
By Randy Gurzi
Since entering the NFL in 1995, the Carolina Panthers have already had their share of talented running backs who were well known throughout their careers. Stephen Davis and DeShaun Foster were two of their first true star players at the position, although they did follow up Tim Biakabutuka, who was there from 1996 through 2001.
Following the tenure of the Davis and Foster tandem, the Panthers then brought in DeAngelo Williams from Memphis, who was with them from 2006 through 2014 before finishing his career with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Williams, who is second all time in yards and third in rushing for the franchise, is in contention for being the best but falls just short, as his long-time teammate Jonathan Stewart takes the title.
Drafted in the first round out of Oregon in 2008, Stewart joined forces with Williams to give Carolina one of the best running back combinations in football.
With Williams was making a living as a quick and elusive back, Stewart was more of a thumper who defenses struggled to consistently take down. The lightning and thunder combination was a staple of the Panthers offense for many years.
Stewart ended up playing for Carolina for 10 seasons before heading to the New York Giants for one final year in 2018. He left the Panthers as their No. 1 all-time rusher with 7,318 yards on the ground. He’s also first in rushing touchdowns (51) by a running back, although quarterback Cam Newton has topped him with 58 entering the 2019 NFL season.
