Predicting the first loss for 8 remaining undefeated NFL teams
Green Bay Packers
Weeks 1-3: at Bears (10-3), vs. Vikings (21-16), vs. Broncos (27-16)
Green Bay Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst was aggressive in trying to change the identity of his team entering the 2019 NFL season. He revamped the defense through both free agency and the draft with big additions like Preston Smith and Rashan Gary, among others, while also bringing in new head coach Matt LaFleur and giving the keys of the defense to Mike Pettine.
Through the first three weeks, those changes have paid off in a big way. In a Week 1 slugfest, the Packers completely stifled the Bears en route to a 10-3 victory. Meanwhile, they then handled the rival Vikings in Week 2 before doing the same to the Broncos in Week 3. Even more impressive is that Green Bay has moved to 3-0 on the season without their offense truly catching fire.
Aaron Rodgers has been fine to start the year but has certainly not been playing at a level we’re accustomed to seeing him at. The Packers have thrived off of the strength of this newly built defense. However, they’re going to be tested in a big way over the next few weeks. They face the Eagles on Thursday Night Football in Week 4, go on the road to Dallas the next week and then have the Lions and Raiders at home before visiting the Chiefs.
As stated, I have the Packers handing Kansas City their first loss of the season. The week after, however, Green Bay stays on the west coast to face a Los Angeles Chargers team that should be fully healthy and needing to make a run. On the heels of beating the Chiefs, the Packers will suffer a letdown game and finally lose in Week 9 at the hands of the Bolts.
