Los Angeles Rams

Weeks 1-3: at Panthers (30-27), vs. Saints (27-9), at Browns (20-13)

Last year’s NFC representative in the Super Bowl has honestly not been all that impressive to begin the 2019 NFL season. The Rams opened up the season by letting the Carolina Panthers — a team that looked hindered by Cam Newton‘s poor play — get dangerously close to a comeback. Meanwhile, the New Orleans Saints then lost Drew Brees in Week 2, paving the way to 2-0 for the Rams.

Finally, Sean McVay and the Rams appeared quite dominant for much of their Week 3 victory over the struggling Browns. At the same time, though, Los Angeles was never able to put their foot on the pedal and pull away, giving Cleveland the opportunity to make a last-ditch effort at a comeback, even if they fell short.

The talent of this Rams team with Jared Goff, Aaron Donald and more is obvious and McVay is still a terrific coach. However, they’ve seemingly lacked a fifth gear early in the 2019 season. Perhaps that has something to do with Todd Gurley‘s lingering knee issues that are clearly limiting his workload and effectiveness.

Either way, expecting the Rams to roll throughout the season, especially in the first half of the year, seems a bit foolish. They welcome the Buccaneers to LA in Week 4 but then go on the road to face the Seahawks in Week 5. In a divisional game in a tough environment, the Rams are going to suffer a letdown and drop to 4-1 at that point.
