Behind starter Jimmy Garoppolo, the 49ers have C.J. Beathard and Nick Mullens, the latter of whom started last season as the third-string quarterback. Last year, however, Mullens showed he could lead a team for an extended period of time after both Garoppolo and Beathard went down with injuries. So, as solid of a backup as Beathard is, he’s a bit expendable in San Francisco.

Enter the Broncos. Although general manager John Elway traded for starter Joe Flacco and drafted Drew Lock in the second round, they still need help at the position. Lock is out with an injury. So, if Flacco goes down, Denver can be in very deep trouble. They need a reliable No. 2 signal-caller behind the veteran. Beathard could be that guy and, for a fifth-round pick, the price is worth it.

No matter how much Jaguars owner Shad Khan loves Jalen Ramsey and states that the team will not be trading him, the writing is pretty much on the wall here. Ramsey is fed up with the Jaguars’ organization and the team’s leadership appears done with him as well. Ramsey needs to be traded as soon as possible and for a relatively good-sized haul.

However, the Jaguars aren’t dealing from a position of strength because Ramsey has shown the willingness to just sit games out. The best package they could hope for would be at least one first-rounder in next year’s draft plus a couple of other mid-round picks.

There are a number of potential playoff teams who could offer this, such as Kansas City (who we have trading for another cornerback), New England, Tampa Bay, Philadelphia, Detroit and many others

The Vikings are the best fit, though. Ramsey would be going to a stable, strong organization that needs a few more pieces to make a playoff push. Why not a cornerback who is arguably the best in the league when he’s at his best? Ramsey is young and supremely talented and is the type of player you build a defense around for the next decade.

I’m not saying he will help get Minnesota back on a playoff track (they could really use an upgrade at quarterback), but he would be an excellent addition to an already talented defensive unit. In my opinion, he would certainly be worth this package of picks — and then some.
