Defensive Grades

Edge defenders: A

Preston Smith and Za’Darius Smith have had the biggest impact of arguably any free agent signing in the entire NFL. Combined, they’ve amassed 7.5 sacks through four games and have transformed Green Bay’s pass rush. Behind them on the depth chart, rookie Rashan Gary has quietly had a promising start and should see more snaps as the season goes on. Meanwhile, Kyler Fackrell has contributed nicely on special teams.

Cornerbacks: A-

Jaire Alexander has been the definition of a lock down corner through four weeks. Alexander’s star power alone raises this unit’s entire grade. Kevin King has had up and down performances and was awful against the Broncos in Week 3, but had arguably his best game as a pro in Week 4 against the Eagles. Behind King and Alexander is capable depth in Tramon Williams and Tony Brown.

Safeties: B+

Adrian Amos has been a breath of fresh air compared to what the Packers have had at safety in recent years. He’s been solid in every facet of the game; run defense, tackling, coverage, etc. Meanwhile, Rookie Darnell Savage has emerged as a strong candidate for Defensive Rookie of the Year. Both starters have had an immediate impact in just four games and have had minimal mistakes. The current depth behind them is dangerously thin.

Defensive line: B

Defensive tackle Kenny Clark has arguably been the best player on the entire defensive unit. Dean Lowry has been both impressive and mediocre, highlighted by a career-day against the Vikings. Montravius Adams has been an underrated contributor, though he’s been sidelined by injury as of recent. Overall, the defensive line has been a strength.

Linebackers: B-

The linebacking corps is easily the weakest link of the defense. Blake Martinez has been impressive in a contract year and currently has the second-most tackles (47) in the NFL. Behind him, however, is a blend of young, inexperienced players. Oren Burks (chest) should be returning soon, but his impact may be negligible.
