Brett Maher missed two kicks in Week 5 and could be running out of chances with the Dallas Cowboys. If so, these three kickers could take his place.

Ahead of the 2018 season, the Dallas Cowboys made a move that shocked many of their fans. While making their cuts to 53 players, the coaching staff decided to move on from long-time placekicker Dan Bailey and instead, they went with a relative unknown in Brett Maher.

Maher, who kicked at Nebraska collegiately, originally tried to make it in the NFL back in 2013 with the New York Jets and the Cowboys. After not making it there, he headed north and played several seasons in the CFL. He then got another shot to make it in the NFL as the Cleveland Browns brought him in during the 2017 offseason.

Finally, he was back in Dallas in 2018 and despite the fact that no one thought there was a kicking battle but Maher still found a way to win the job. What won it for him was his powerful leg, which he showed off during his rookie season by knocking in a team-record 62-yard field goal.

However, he has also struggled with accuracy. He missed a kick against the Washington Redskins that could have sent the game to overtime and finished the year 29-of-37. He also missed an attempt in the team’s playoff loss to the Los Angeles Rams, but none of that seems to have hurt the team’s confidence in him.

Apparently, neither did his dreadful outing in Week 5. Against the Green Bay Packers, Maher missed two kicks, including a 33-yarder that could have moved them to within a touchdown ‚— and would have allowed them to try for an onside kick. Sure, it would have been a long-shot for them to try and win but that’s better than no shot, which is what they had.

Even after the game, and a 4-of-7 start to the season, Dallas seems content to roll out Maher going forward. Should they change their minds, they could look to one of these three kickers who are waiting for a phone call.
