3. The Smith bros continue to dominate

Only three players have more quarterback pressures (30) through five weeks than Packers outside linebacker Za’Darius Smith. His partner in crime (and the other half of the Smith Brothers), Preston Smith, has the ninth-most pressures (24). Together, the two Smiths have 54 pressures over five weeks, according to PFF (subscription required). Last year, the Packers’ entire group of edge defenders had a total of 85 pressures over the entire season.

The Smith brothers were brought in to do one thing: get after the quarterback. Both were signed to a free agent deal this past March. So far, they’ve done their job, and perhaps more. Before the season started, there was much hype built around how both had the potential to turn around the Packers defense. It’s safe to say they’ve met expectations.

The Lions have been one of the worst pass-blocking offensive lines in the NFL through five weeks, which bodes well for a Packers defense that’s been keen on affecting the quarterback. The Smiths have already combined for 10.5 sacks this season, and it wouldn’t be surprising to see three or four more added to that tally on Monday night.
