After three-straight losses, Jason Garrett is no longer on a hot seat, but rather a throne of fire. Here are some options for the Dallas Cowboys should they cut the cord.
Yes, Jerry Jones continues to publicly support Jason Garrett, but the actions aren’t lining up. The Dallas Cowboys owner wants desperately to be right about Garrett, who he hand-picked as the future head coach back in 2007 when he hired him as an offensive coordinator before even naming Wade Phillips as head coach.
Then in 2010 when they fired Phillips, Garrett took over and the team has been up and down ever since. They’ve had some seasons with success but overall, they continue to come up short and have never gotten past the second round of the playoffs.
For that reason, Garrett entered this season without a contract extension and is set to be a free agent at the end of the year. After three-straight losses (following a 3-0 start) Garrett’s job security is again in question.
Jones says he’s the guy but the lack of a contract beyond the next 10 games speaks volumes. Unless he rights this ship, Garrett will be gone in the offseason. With that being said, we look at five potential coaches who could replace the man who sits on a seat that’s steadily increasing in temperature.
Notable Omission: Kellen Moore, Offensive Coordinator
One name that could be floated as a potential coach is Kellen Moore, the team’s current offensive coordinator. Moore had a hot start in the team’s three wins but his play-calling has looked much more like Scott Linehan’s than his own as of late.
There’s speculation that Garrett has taken over, which goes along with claims that he sabotaged Wade Phillips back in 2010 to get the job he currently has. Whether that’s true or not, the Cowboys might consider Moore because of the affection this front office has for him.
Also, Jones still wants to find his own Tom Landry and after Garrett failed him (assuming he doesn’t turn it around) he could look to the 30-year old wonder kid. Still, he’s incredibly raw which makes this feel like a long shot.
Maybe instead, Jones can keep him on as the offensive coordinator and name him head coach in waiting. Then he can find an aging coach to be a lame duck for three seasons or so. That could work, right?
