Dallas Cowboys: 5 Potential replacements for Jason Garrett’s increasingly hot seat
By Randy Gurzi
1. Lincoln Riley – Head Coach, Oklahoma Sooners
If the whispers out there are true, this one is bound to happen one day. With Jason Garrett struggling — and with no extension in sight — the rumors about Lincoln Riley taking over the job in Dallas have continued to spread.
Riley, who is currently the head coach at Oklahoma, has done a tremendous job working with quarterbacks and is able to get the most out of whoever he coaches. In 2017, he helped Baker Mayfield win the Heisman Trophy and then watched him go No. 1 overall to the Cleveland Browns.
He then helped Kyler Murray have a sensational season that also ended with the signal-caller winning the Heisman before going first overall to the Arizona Cardinals. It doesn’t appear Riley is done working his magic either as he’s now winning with Jalen Hurts, who transferred from Alabama.
The continued success with multiple quarterbacks has led to the belief that Riley is the man who can take Dak Prescott to the next level. Because of that, people such as Colin Cowherd are saying this is the guy Jerry Jones will turn to.
"“The Cowboys need a coach who can get more out of Dak… I think it’s going to happen. I don’t know when it’s going to happen, but I think Jerry Jones has his guy.” — Cowherd speaking on the connection between Jones and Riley on The Herd"
Of course, it’s all speculation and we’ve all seen the Jones family stick with Garrett year after year despite the constant pleading by fans to move on from the former backup quarterback. However, there’s no shortage of options for the most visible franchise in the sport should they decide to make a move this offseason.
