Kansas City Chiefs vs. Denver Broncos: 5 Bold predictions for Week 7
3. Williams, McCoy ignite rushing game
One of the stark changes for the Kansas City Chiefs offense this season, especially as of late, has been their lack of commitment and effectiveness when it comes to running the ball. In the loss to Houston last week, the Chiefs did average 4.8 yards per carry but they only ran the ball 11 times, one of which was from Patrick Mahomes.
Though Mahomes and the Kansas City passing attack are lethal — no one can deny that — the Chiefs offense is at its most prolific when they’re running the ball consistently. They have a host of capable players in Damien Williams, LeSean McCoy and even Darrel Williams that can step up and carry the football. The key is giving them the ball and then allowing that to further set up play-action and the rest of the passing offense.
We’ll start to see that on Thursday night at Mile High. Denver’s run defense this season has been good but not completely stifling. They have given up 111.8 yards per game on the year through the first six games, so the Chiefs aren’t going to be able to run the ball without being touched in Week 7.
However, with pre-snap motion and a symbiotic relationship between the running and passing attacks, Andy Reid can open up holes for the Chiefs rushing game and he will. The result will be McCoy and Damien Williams combining for over 100 yards rushing on the day and at least 20 total carries for the running back group as a whole.
