3. Atlanta Falcons

It seems like forever ago that the Atlanta Falcons were a persistent team knocking on the door of the Super Bowl. With quarterback Matt Ryan and receiver Julio Jones, the Falcons seemed a part of the annual discussion of who might be a championship contender.

Then, a dramatic and embarrassing comeback by the New England Patriots happened at Super Bowl LI, where the Falcons coughed up a 34-28 loss in overtime. Still, it seemed that even with the defeat, Atlanta was one of those teams in the yearly mix.

Not so much anymore.

Atlanta is spiraling. They are in an NFC South that is more predictable than good with the New Orleans Saints safely in control. Meanwhile, the Falcons are stuck at the bottom with a record of 1-5, losers of four straight and going nowhere fast.

In three short years, it’s gone from feast to famine. In 2016, Atlanta was 11-5. Since they have gone 10-6 and then 7-9 last season. At 1-5, odds are long that they put it together anytime soon. The Falcons are all over the place on offense and, defensively, they can’t stop anyone.

The owner has been steady that head coach Dan Quinn is safe. But back to back games against the Rams and the Seahawks could result in a record of 1-7 to close out the first half of the season. Such a scenario could quickly change that tune in Atlanta.
