5. New England Patriots

This is a long shot, but it wouldn’t be surprising in the least if the Patriots and Bill Belichick made a move for Green. As it is, New England already has Julian Edelman and Josh Gordon. The team also got N’Keal Harry back recently. The Patriots do not need Green, but the team isn’t beyond putting an embarrassment of riches around Tom Brady. Wasn’t that what they tried to do when they signed Antonio Brown earlier this year?

The contract scenario fits with what Belichick prefers as well. Green is a veteran player who has been very productive and successful in the past, and he’s in the final year of his contract. That means the Patriots don’t have to pay him a boatload of money. All things considered, it’s a low-risk scenario financially compared to acquiring alternative receiving options.

The big concern with Green is his history of injuries. Trading for a player who is never available will look wasteful. However, as we already determined, the Patriots don’t need Green. Even if the trade goes down and Green gets hurt again and misses a few weeks later in the season, New England can survive.

For other teams, trading for Green is essential and that elevates concerns about his health. The Patriots can rest him as much as they see fit to make sure he’s ready for a playoff push.

This is one of the less likely trade scenarios that is being discussed in fan circles right now. That being said, it could be the most impactful scenario. Making the giant of the NFL even stronger could open the doors for the Patriots to waltz to another Lombardi trophy.
