NFL Trade Deadline 2019: 5 Landing spots for A.J. Green
By Samuel Teets
2. Green Bay Packers
While the Packers have one of the best quarterbacks of this generation, they’re tiptoeing on eggshells when it comes to wide receiver depth right now. The team might feature Davante Adams, but turf toe has hindered the Pro Bowl wide receiver. He has already missed Weeks 5 and 6.
To put things in perspective, Allen Lazard, an undrafted wide receiver from Iowa State, was Rodgers’ leading receiver in the Week 6 win over the Detroit Lions. Lazard is a talented player who surprised me when he went undrafted, but the Packers have to surround their future Hall of Fame quarterback with more weapons.
Green Bay’s leading receiver this season is Adams, and he missed two weeks. Marquez Valdes-Scantling is second in receiving with 283 yards. That’s only 47.2 yards per game. After Valdes-Scantling, Aaron Jones has been the team’s most productive player in the receiving game. The Packers should be embarrassed for not being able to better support their quarterback.
In the competitive NFC North, the Packers need to add as much talent as possible if they want to compete against the Bears and Minnesota Vikings. While Green Bay currently leads the division at 5-1, the Vikings are hitting their stride and the Bears are getting Mitchell Trubisky back from an injury.
Minnesota’s defense is ranked fifth in yards allowed per game. The Bears are sixth. The Bears have allowed the third-fewest points this season. The Vikings have allowed the sixth-fewest. An injured Adams and pedestrian wide receiver corps won’t cut it for Green Bay. They need another true receiving threat, and lining Green up alongside Adams would create one of the most formidable receiving duos in the NFL.
