Pick via Bears

After picking at No. 18, the Oakland Raiders are right back on the clock at No. 19. This time, it’s the final first-round pick they got from the Chicago Bears in exchange for Khalil Mack. They already feel good about Clelin Ferrell, who they picked last season as a replacement for Mack and now add some more talent to the front seven as they grab Isaiah Simmons from Clemson.

General manager Mike Mayock said drafting players from Alabama and Clemson is a way to build a winner and he continually went to that well in his first draft last year. He continues that here with a player who can go sideline-to-sideline and make plays. An athletic freak, Simmons has spent time at safety which gives him the ability to make plays in the passing game that some middle linebacker simply can’t.

Carolina Panthers. Xavier McKinney. 20. player. 87. . S

Ron Rivera may have saved his job — or maybe Kyle Allen has. The Carolina Panthers have had a hard time winning games with Cam Newton under center and it seemed as though they were all but done this year. Then Newton got hurt and Allen came in and just started winning games.

While Allen gets all the credit, the defense is just as responsible. Already a strong unit, they get even better here with the selection of Xavier McKinney. Alabama has sent many safeties to the NFL and McKinney looks to be the next star that’s capable of playing either safety position.
