7. Kansas City Chiefs (10)

Entering the Week 6 Thursday Night Football game against the Denver Broncos, the Kansas City Chiefs were looking to stop the bleeding. They were on a two-game losing streak but even more concerning was the ankle injury that had been bothering 2018 NFL MVP Patrick Mahomes. He was still playing well even with the ailment and started out 10-of-11 for 76 yards and a score.

He then ran a quarterback sneak near the goal line, which ended up finishing him off for the night. Mahomes went down trying to fight for yards and his right knee ended up buckling and sent him out of the game. It was later revealed he had a dislocated patella but wouldn’t miss as much time as originally feared.

They still ended up winning the game against Denver by a score of 30-6. Matt Moore played well in the absence of Mahomes but that wasn’t the real story. Instead, the reason to be optimistic in Kansas City has to do with the way the defense played. They registered nine sacks in this game and forced three fumbles — one of which was returned for a five-yard touchdown by linebacker Reggie Ragland.

An underwhelming defense caused the Chiefs to miss the Super Bowl last season, so seeing them finally start to turn things around has to be encouraging. Now, all they need to do is tread water for the next few games while waiting for Mahomes to get back to 100 percent.
