NFL Trade Deadline 2019: 5 Teams that should be sellers
By Samuel Teets
1. Miami Dolphins
Trade assets: Kenyan Drake, Xavien Howard, Reshad Jones, DeVante Parker
The Dolphins already showed their hand this season when they traded away second-year safety Minkah Fitzpatrick. The promising Alabama product yielded a 2020 first-round pick from Pittsburgh. The Dolphins also traded their best offensive lineman, Laremy Tunsil, to the Houston Texans in return for a 2020 first-round pick, a 2021 first-round pick and a 2021 second-round pick. Kenny Stills was also sent away in the trade.
Miami has its eyes set on rebuilding the entire roster from scratch. With the number of high picks the team has acquired, that could certainly happen. As it is, the Dolphins are sitting pretty after a Week 6 loss to the Redskins. That puts Miami one step closer to securing the top pick in the 2020 draft, which will presumably be Alabama’s Tua Tagovailoa.
The Dolphins could look to move safety, Reshad Jones before the NFL Trade Deadline. Miami drafted Jones back in 2010. Now, the 31-year old former Pro Bowler is out of place on a rebuilding team. He’s also in the middle of a costly contract. Jones signed a five-year, $60 million extension back in 2017. The deal lasts for two more years and then has a team option for 2022.
Running back Kenyan Drake has also been tied to trade rumors, per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. The young running back has failed to make a major impact this season. Wide receiver DeVante Parker falls in a similar boat.
Pro Bowl cornerback Xavier Howard has been one of the sole bright spots of the Dolphins in recent years. With the 26-year old signed until the 2025 offseason, the team could rebuild and still keep Howard as a cornerstone. Of course, he would also bring in the greatest haul of their remaining assets.
