While the Seattle Seahawks are sitting at 5-2, the team could benefit from filling positions of need by trading for players ahead of the 2019 NFL Trade Deadline.

The 5-2 Seattle Seahawks are heavily favored to make the playoffs this season, but the team isn’t garnering as much Super Bowl attention. Even though the team is led by Russell Wilson, who is an MVP candidate, the Seahawks still have a lot of holes in their roster.

While trading for players isn’t the most conventional way to fill position needs, especially in the NFL, teams that are seriously targeting the Super Bowl are open to making some splashy moves.

The Seahawks have already traded for Jadeveon Clowney this season. Injuries and being leveraged into trading Frank Clark this past offseason created the need for a dynamic edge rusher. Clowney has filled that need, but his addition may have closed Seattle off from further trades.

How the Seahawks act near the Oct. 29 NFL trade deadline will be determined by how much the coaching staff and front office believe that the time to win is now. If the Seahawks are looking for immediate improvements, they should try to acquire one of these five players.

5. A.J. Green, WR, Cincinnati Bengals

The buy-in price for Green will probably be too high for the Seahawks. There will be other teams who view Green as a necessary addition, but the Seahawks have survived without a true superstar wide receiver for years. Doug Baldwin was good, but he wasn’t among the upper echelon of receivers. Tyler Lockett is in a similar situation. Still, Wilson has always found ways to win games with the pieces around him. That makes Green an unnecessary luxury.

Per The Athletic’s Paul Dehner Jr., head coach Zac Taylor has made it clear the team doesn’t plan to trade Green. However, as ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported, the owner of the Jacksonville Jaguars also claimed the team had no plans to trade Jalen Ramsey. The All-Pro corner suited up for the Los Angeles Rams this past weekend. All players are available for the right price.

Seattle does have a first-round draft pick for 2020, which they should shop around. Pete Carroll’s team is used to not having first-round picks after all. The team went through 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2017 without a first-round selection.

The team has also failed to capitalize on its top draft picks in the last two years. In 2018, the Seahawks drafted backup running back Rashaad Penny. Penny has flashed potential, but Chris Carson has been a better fit for Seattle’s system. Penny has also been outclassed by many other running backs from his draft class. Seattle’s first-round pick this year, defensive end L.J. Collier, has been injured and failed to make an immediate impact.

While Green is in the final year of his contract, the Seahawks may want to strike the iron while it’s hot and make a move for the veteran. This is Wilson’s best season and perhaps the team’s final year with Clowney and Jarran Reed. It’s time for the Seahawks to weigh their options.
