The Jacksonville Jaguars lost their starting quarterback Nick Foles to a broken clavicle early in Week 1’s home loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. While Gardner Minshew has been a nice story as a sixth-round rookie picked out of Washington State in the most recent NFL Draft, Foles is the better quarterback long-term for Jacksonville.

On this week’s episode of Stacking the Box, FanSided‘s Matt Verderame and Mark Carman, along with former NFL offensive lineman Geoff Schwartz assess the Jacksonville quarterback situation and what the Jaguars should do once Foles comes back from his injury (1:01:50).

“Nick Foles is starting [when he comes back], he’s better than Gardner Minshew,” said Schwartz. “I think Nick Foles is good. I don’t think he’s Super Bowl Nick Foles good, but are the [Chicago] Bears going to pay Nick Foles that much money? One of the reasons they’re building the team the way they are now is because [Mitchell] Trubisky is cheap.”

Schwartz would add that Foles was “uniquely equipped” to lead the Philadelphia Eagles to a Super Bowl victory in 2017, but outside of a few games the last few years in Philadelphia, he’s been just okay as a quarterback. So that might mean Carman’s Chicago Bears are better served not taking on Foles’ big contract from Jacksonville to replace the struggling Mitchell Trubisky in 2020.

Jacksonville does find itself, at least for the time being, in a great situation regarding its quarterbacks. While normally having two starters means you don’t have one, the Jaguars can win in the near-present with Foles once he returns from injury and either groom Minshew to be his successor or trade him, get some valued assets and draft another quarterback down the road.
