The season has been tumultuous in Washington and the NFL Trade Deadline might be the time to finally part with longtime tackle Trent Williams.

Things have been messy from top-to-bottom with the Washington Redskins this season. Both offensively and, surprisingly, defensively, this team has been falling flat on their faces in the 2019 campaign. They’ve already fired Jay Gruden to set up a new direction for the future. But, stubbornly, offensive tackle Trent Williams remains on the roster.

Williams has been holding out since the offseason, making it known he no longer wants to be in Washington. Having said that, the longtime star on the offensive line has not been moved due to Dan Snyder and the front office’s insistence that they want to keep him around — even if he’s refusing to take the field.

This is a lost season for the Redskins, though, and it’s clear that a rebuild needs to take place. And trading Trent Williams would go a long way in helping kickstart that rebuild. He’s been one of the best offensive tackles in the NFL for much of his career and would be a hot commodity on the trade market if they choose to actually deal him.

Washington could bring in quite a haul for Williams and, if they choose to deal him, these five teams would make sense as possible landing spots ahead of the Oct. 29 NFL Trade Deadline.

New York Jets

Coming off of taking brutal thumping from the New England Patriots and sitting at just 1-5 on the year, it’s been a rough start for the New York Jets. Part of that has been Sam Darnold‘s bout with mono but it’s more than just that. Their pass-blocking this season has been downright atrocious, which the Patriots put on full display in Week 7. They need an upgrade at offensive tackle in the worst way.

With Darnold’s injury and the subsequent 1-5 start that the Jets have limped to, this might already be a lost season for the Jets. Having said that, a trade for Trent Williams would not just be a move to help finish strong in 2019 but also to help this team be set up for future success.

Trading for Williams is an interesting proposition for a team like the Jets. As most teams would, a deal would likely cost New York a first-round pick. Having said that, adding Williams would likely improve their team enough by boosting the offensive line that the pick would fall in the mid-first as opposed to being a top-10 pick, where they are currently on track to select.

Even if it is a high pick that the Jets end giving up to the Redskins, though, Williams is a known commodity that can help protect Darnold and Le’Veon Bell right away. That takes out the risk of the draft and helps New York be set up for more immediate success.
