The Dallas Cowboys made a splash by trading for defensive lineman Michael Bennett. They could improve even more by adding one of these safeties ahead of the 2019 NFL Trade Deadline

In a completely unexpected move, the Dallas Cowboys pulled off a big trade during the bye week as they sent a seventh-round pick, which could turn into a sixth-rounder, to the New England Patriots in exchange for defensive lineman Michael Bennett.

While it was unexpected, the move made perfect sense for the Cowboys. They were recently dealt a blow when Tyrone Crawford was sent to IR with a hip issue. His loss was huge because Crawford is one of the more versatile defensive linemen for Dallas, capable of playing both end and tackle.

Bennett offers the same flexibility as he’s been a star at both positions, most notably during his time with the Seattle Seahawks where he worked with current defensive backs coach and passing game coordinator Kris Richard. Bennett not only fills the hole left by Crawford, but he’s actually a better option when it comes to rushing the passer.

As great as this move was for them, there’s still another hole on the roster Dallas should look to fill. They’re still less than ideal at safety and could use a player there to improve the back end of their defense. With that being said, we look at three players who they could target ahead of the Oct. 29 NFL Trade Deadline.

Notable omission: Jamal Adams

The dream scenario for Dallas Cowboys fans is to see Jamal Adams join the team. He’s one of the better safeties in the NFL and a complete game-changer for the secondary. Should Dallas land him, their secondary would be vastly improved.

Having said that, it’s highly unlikely the struggling New York Jets would part ways with him. While they do need to rebuild, it makes no sense to move on from Adams — and if they did, the price they would be asking is likely too high for the Cowboys to pay at the moment.
