The Dallas Cowboys tried hard to land safety Jamal Adams but it didn’t work out but they can still look to add some help at a major position of need.

For years, the Dallas Cowboys have had a glaring need at safety and for whatever reason, they’ve been reluctant to fill it. That nearly changed ahead of the 2019 NFL Trade Deadline as they were in serious negotiations with the New York Jets regarding Jamal Adams.

In the end, no deal was made due to the high demands of the Jets front office, but it showed that the Cowboys are finally admitting they need to make a move at the position should they want to become true contenders.

The lack of a deadline deal means Jeff Heath and Xavier Woods remain the two starters but there are some free agents out there should they want to add some competition for down the stretch. Here, we look at three players who could come in and compete with Heath, who is the player we assume the front office is looking to replace as a starter — although he’s a fine backup and a good special teams player.

Notable Omission: Su’a Cravens

A former second-round pick of the Washington Redskins, Su’a Cravens came into the NFL in 2016 with a lot of hype. Unfortunately, the USC product never lived up to the lofty expectations. In fact, he eve walked away from the game after recording 33 tackles and a pick as a rookie.

He ended up returning to the game last season with the Denver Broncos but managed to play only five games — recording 18 tackles. Cravens was cut as the Broncos finalized their roster making him a free agent. Should Dallas be desperate, he could be considered — but for now, they’re probably better off with Jeff Heath and Donovan Wilson.
