A Dead Trade Deadline

That was boring. With all the hype surrounding this year’s trade deadline, the deadline itself was dead. At least a few teams decided to make some moves, all of which I discuss here.

Dolphins trade Kenyan Drake to Cardinals for a sixth-round pick

Miami: Remember that the pick can become a fifth-rounder based on Drake’s performance with the team. This is a nice little deal for general manager Chris Grier and the Dolphins who clearly had no plans to re-sign Drake after this season. Look for Mark Walton to get more touches now.

Arizona: Drake is purely injury insurance for running backs David Johnson and Chase Edmonds, who could both miss Thursday night’s game against San Fransisco. Drake is talented enough to be a viable option in both the running and the passing game.

Jets trade Leonard Williams to Giants for a third-round pick and a 2021 fifth-round pick

Giants: Once regarded as a steal at sixth overall, Williams is apparently not that good? I’m confused because I feel like he still has upside, even if it is his fifth season. Five sacks wasn’t great last season, but every player on the Jets in 2018 was handicapped by the terrible coaching staff. This deal also hinges on Williams’ impending free agency.

Jets: A third-round pick for a player who has underwhelmed is not a bad deal, especially when a fire sale is looming. Let’s face it. Sam Darnold has no help, Le’Veon Bell was overpaid (even if he is very good) and Jamal Adams is not happy. New general manager Joe Douglas has no ties to Head Coach Adam Gase, who was a terrible hire from the start. Any draft picks should be coveted for a team that needs to hit the reset button.

Rams trade Aqib Talib and a fifth-round pick to Dolphins for future late-round pick

Los Angeles: They needed cap space to pay players like Jalen Ramsey; they basically sold a draft pick for $4.5 million.

Miami: They said, “Hey, if you want more cash to spend, give us a higher draft pick.” I doubt Talib lasts with the team, anyway.
