Draft Spotlight

Every week, I’ll dissect a college football player who recently grabbed the spotlight and what his future holds in the NFL. This week, I’ll be looking at a playmaker who could be the next big thing, or not.

Who: Jalen Hurts, QB, Oklahoma

What Works

  • Athleticism
  • Big arm
  • Decision-Making
  • Leadership
  • Mobility
  • Playmaking
  • Poise
  • Quickness
  • Size (6-2, 218 pounds)
  • Stats
  • Throwing on the run
  • Vision

What Needs Work

  • Can hold ball too long
  • Is he just product of scheme/surrounding talent?
  • Slow release, needs to be quicker
  • Tends to drop eyes and take off

The Scout’s Opinion

"“I don’t think Hurts is going to be a first-round pick, but he could land in Round 2 if he keeps playing this well. I want to see him against the Longhorns and better competition the rest of the way. Remember, he is doing this for an OU team that replaced four starters along the offensive line and lost its best receiver in Marquise Brown, who was drafted in Round 1 by the Baltimore Ravens. I don’t think Hurts is a fluke. He’s legit.” – Mel Kiper, ESPN"

Outlook: As lethal as he is as a runner, Hurts is an impressive passer, too. He still has improvements to make if he wants to be a high draft choice in April.

Early Projection: Early Second Round
