Josh Gordon has been released off IR by the Patriots, meaning any NFL team can sign him off waivers. Which teams should try to ink the wide receiver?

Whenever Josh Gordon was cleared to play for the New England Patriots in the 2019 NFL season, many thought he was due for a monstrous season. He appeared to be the most dangerous weapon in the wide receiver corps and fans had visions of Randy Moss and Tom Brady working together. Instead, it never materialized and now Gordon is on the open market.

After being put on IR recently following a knee injury that forced him out of a Week 6 game, the Patriots released Josh Gordon on Thursday, which means that he’s now available to be signed on waivers. Though he has been hurt a bit this season, he does appear as if he will be ready to take the field again sooner rather than later this year.

And for a player with Gordon’s potential, there should be plenty of buyers on the wide receiver. Even in a “down year” with the Patriots, he had 20 catches for 287 yards and a touchdown in six games. At his best with the Cleveland Browns in 2013 — prior to his off-field issues — though, Gordon had 87 catches for 1,646 yards and nine scores in only 14 games.

That type of top-end performance, even if he can’t get to those same heights still, is too tantalizing for teams to pass up. And looking around the NFL, Josh Gordon would be an ideal fit for these five teams, meaning they should be putting their claim in for him.

5. New Orleans Saints

How can anyone not be impressed with the New Orleans Saints? Even though this team lost their heartbeat, quarterback Drew Brees, early in the season to injury, they didn’t miss a beat with Teddy Bridgewater at the helm. They are very clearly one of the most complete teams in the NFL, playing fantastic defense right now and the offense continuing to hum as we have come to expect from the Saints, especially now that Brees is back.

Despite how complete this team is, Josh Gordon is the type of player that could take them to the next level. Brees has made a living off of utilizing whoever is on the roster to have success throwing the ball but the fact remains that Michael Thomas is the only bonafide standout in the group of pass-catchers that the veteran quarterback has at his disposal. Gordon would change that.

You could make the argument that a Thomas-Gordon pairing would give Brees the most potentially dangerous wide receiver tandem that he’s had in his entire career. With how well this team is playing, that’s a terrifying proposition for the rest of the league. If you’re the Saints, though, it’s a possibility worth exploring as the wide receiver could be a piece to help push them over the top in a loaded NFC.
