NFL Notebook Week 9: MVP race, playoff picture, awards and more

College Football Corner
While I don’t watch as much Saturday football as I do on Sunday, I still have plenty to say about all the happenings in college football. Here are some quick thoughts…
- It’s nice to see SMU relevant again, even if their undefeated season was spoiled by Memphis.
- The Alabama-LSU game this weekend will be the biggest game of the season thus far. The winner is all but guaranteed a spot in the SEC Championship, and even if one of them lose that game, a trip to the SEC playoff is not out of the question. A one-loss Alabama or one-loss LSU both have compelling cases.
- FSU should have never tried Willie Taggart in the first place. I wonder if they’ll go after a big name, like Bob Stoops.
- I still want to see Joe Burrow, Jalen Hurts, Justin Fields and Jonathan Taylor in New York for the Heisman ceremony.
- All of a sudden, the PAC-12 is looking juicy with Oregon and Utah both solidifying themselves as top-ten programs.
- I’m not sure if I buy the Auburn hype. On one hand, wins against Oregon and Texas A&M are nice, and close losses to LSU and Florida aren’t terrible either. If they beat Georgia this weekend, there’s a shot Missouri makes the SEC Championship.
- Clemson running back Travis Etienne is so good.
- Auburn defensive tackle Derrick Brown is good, too.
- A year after big hires, UCLA (Chip Kelly) and Nebraska (Scott Frost) are both 4-5. That’s a little concerning, even if patience is important with second-year college football coaches.
