Cam Newton won’t play again for the Panthers in 2019 and there’s reason to believe he’ll be on another NFL team in 2020. Where could he land?

The only two games that Cam Newton will play for the Carolina Panthers in the 2019 NFL season will be the opening two contests. After being sidelined with a foot injury following an 0-2 start to the year, Kyle Allen has taken over for the Panthers and performed well. Now, Newton’s recovery has apparently not come along and Carolina put him on season-ending IR on Tuesday.

With the way that Allen has played and the Panthers with him, the question now becomes if Cam Newton has played his final game in Carolina. Since winning MVP and leading the team to Super Bowl 50, his play has been erratic and his injury history troubling. And since the Panthers could save $19.1 million by trading or cutting him, it’s not far-fetched to think that Newton could be on another team in the 2020 season.

Taking that into account and looking at the possibilities, these are the five best landing spots for the quarterback via trade or free agency if the Panthers do decide to cut ties with Newton.

Wild Card Possibility: Oakland Raiders

For quite some time, fans and analysts alike have wondered how long Derek Carr will Jon Gruden’s choice at quarterback for the Oakland Raiders. Despite speculation this past offseason that the Raiders could move on, Carr remains the guy and, in truth, has played some of the best football of his career in 2019.

Having said that, the Raiders are preparing for their move to Las Vegas next year. Gruden and general manager Mike Mayock have made this team much better than they were when they arrived and better than many people expected them to be in general. At the same time, however, there is still a wow-factor that is somewhat lacking with the silver and black.

Though Carr has played well and is capable of leading teams to wins, acquiring Cam Newton would certainly be a splash move made for Sin City. The logistics of moving on from Carr right now make it unlikely but, if this team is going to make some big noise as they head to their new home, acquiring one of the biggest names at quarterback you’ll find would fit the bill.
