Cam Newton: 5 Best possible landing spots in 2020
3. Tennessee Titans
In the fifth season of his rookie deal, Marcus Mariota entered the 2019 season in an ultimate prove-it year with the Tennessee Titans. He had not done enough since being selected second overall in the 2015 draft to warrant signing a second contract to stay in Nashville yet and it was up to the Oregon product and former Heisman Trophy winner to show that he was indeed worth the investment.
On the contrary, Mariota showed definitively that he was not worth it — so much so that he’s been benched at midseason in favor of former Dolphin Ryan Tannehill. Even more telling about Mariota is the fact that the offense has looked its best this season with Tannehill at the helm, despite the fact that this is his first season with the Titans.
Mariota is not the guy for the future and, though he’s been fine, neither is Tannehill in Tennessee. And while conventional wisdom might say that the Titans should look to the draft to find their answer, especially given the rich quarterback class, looking at a more proven commodity like Cam Newton might actually make more sense.
Newton is not a perfect player and doesn’t have the long-term future of a draft prospect. At the same time, though, he also puts the Titans in a position where they can maximize the overwhelming talent on their roster and potentially compete in a major way. It remains to be seen if this philosophy would work for them but the reasoning as to why it would is very much there.
