1. D.J. Swearinger, LB/S

Drafted in 2013, Swearinger has tallied 386 tackles (297 solo), 14 interceptions, nine forced fumbles and 40 pass breakups in 94 career games (70 starts) with the Houston Texans, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Washington Redskins and Arizona Cardinals. Swearinger was ranked as one of PFF’s top safeties last season with the Redskins, earning an overall grade of 79.8 (subscription required) and allowing a passer rating of just 67.1.

The Packers could use a coverage safety who excels at stopping the run. Swearinger isn’t as adept as McDonald when it comes to run defense, but he’d still provide a reliable option, especially if Green Bay’s current starting strong safety, Adrian Amos (hamstring), is expected to miss any length of time.

With Ibraheim Campbell expected to make his season debut Sunday against the Carolina Panthers, it remains to be seen how the Packers could fare with a true run-stuffing hybrid linebacker. They’ll have quite the test against star running back Christian McCaffrey, so the defense’s performance on Sunday could determine whether Brian Gutekunst is comfortable making a midseason free-agent acquisition.
