6. Grant Delpit, S, LSU

If you want to understand how important the safety position in the NFL, ask the New York Jets and Dallas Cowboys. Jamal Adams never became a Cowboy despite them offering the Jets a day one and day three pick, reportedly.

LSU’s Grant Delpit is the type of game-changing safety NFL teams want. For starters, he has versatility to line up in man coverage or drop into zone. Delpit has great quickness and movement skills, comparable to a corner but, of course, he plays safety. LSU has used him inside to cover the slot and lined him up against tight ends. He has great length on his lean 6-3, 200-pound frame which allows him to match up with tight ends at the next level.

Much like he’s used at LSU, teams could opt to play him closer to the line of scrimmage. However, he’s more than that. He plays an aggressive attacking style you want in a safety. Delpit isn’t the best tackler but he sticks his nose in the run game and isn’t afraid of contact.

Delpit’s football intellect shows in his ability to get to the ball, whether it’s in zone coverage, single high or as a blitzer. In fact, when LSU had him blitzing in 2018, he managed five sacks. Teams can use him in single-high because he has the speed and range. Last season he finished with five interceptions.

Delpit could come in right away and change the secondary of any team that drafts. If he runs fast at the combine, he’ll hear his name called in the top five.
